What is STEP?
STEP (Student Transition Employment Program) is a partnership between Stand Up Inc., local city or county high schools, and community businesses. It is designed to aid participants in learning the necessary skills to become successful in a competitive workplace environment. Through various classroom and hands-on learning experiences, the students will leave the program having learned valuable social skills, interpersonal communication skills, work ethics, safety training, and many other concepts related to the workforce.
Benefits for students:

  • Allows students to experience real life work
  • Students are provided a structured learning environment to learn how to work in an integrated setting
  • Students gain work references upon completion of the program
  • Students work with a job coach and are exposed to Supported Employment (can this be linked to the SE page on our site)
  • Student gain confidence and learn to become self-advocates

Benefits for parents:

  • Students are exposed to work and see different ways they can be successful in the future
  • Students are exposed to job coaching
  • Students will be given information about services after high school and be encouraged to connect with a DARS counselor
  • Parents will be given  reports of student’s progress throughout the program and ways to help them succeed after school
  • Parents are given opportunities to connect with DARS and Stand Up Inc. about life after school
