Shining Star: Nhoj Stone

By Stand Up, Inc. | Virginia Supported Employment

In the fast-paced environment of Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, the name Stone has become synonymous with dedication and leadership. From beginning in the dish section to his current role as the Manager of Food Services, Stone’s journey is a testament to hard work and the power of mentorship.

Our Social Media Manager sat down with Stone last month to ask him a few questions about his journey. Stone’s career at Centra began in the dish section through Centra Project SEARCH, a program dedicated to creating work opportunities for young adults with disabilities. Like any job, there’s a learning curve. “We live and learn…” said Stone. He emphasized the importance of “paying attention to details or anything that needs to be done in the kitchen” and noted that the team works best when everyone feels seen and heard. In his role as Manager of Food Services, Stone currently supervises Nathan, a fellow Centra Project SEARCH graduate. “It’s been great! We have ups and downs, but I’m proud of him. He has grown,” Stone shared, describing this as a rewarding experience.

Since joining Centra, Stone has undergone tremendous personal and professional growth. A pivotal figure in Stone’s journey has been John Martin, whose mentorship has directly influenced Stone’s career. “I learned [a lot] from John… he came in and helped me out.” Stone reflected fondly on John and all of the folks who have worked alongside him on his journey. “A lot of people have helped me and looked out for me, and my thanks go to all of them!” Stone’s passion for his work is evident, as is his appreciation for mentors who have encouraged him to strive for success.

Looking ahead, Stone has clear goals for the future. “My goal is to always be working towards something better,” said Stone, further demonstrating his commitment to continuous improvement and inspiring others. His journey to a leadership role is not only a personal triumph, but an inspiration to his colleagues and the broader community. As Stone continues to pursue his goals and mentor others, he embodies the spirit of growth and perseverance that defines the best of Centra Project SEARCH and Lynchburg General Hospital.

They see his sharp, precise movements as he skillfully mixes various liquids together, pouring them in their cups without spilling a drop. This Lynchburg Va. Project SEARCH student's movements bring to mind a well-oiled machine, dutifully completing each task in a quick, timely manner.

Since anxiety disorders do not disappear until they're dealt with, it is critical to inform someone that can help. If a person does not seem to understand right away, talk to another trusted adult.
